All the work will be worth it
When I was sixteen, I had the chance to travel to Japan for a summer abroad and to attend school there. Here was the catch, it was not cheap. I was in no way wealthy, so an alumnus of the prep school I was attending on scholarship said she’d pay for my trip in full if I maintained a high GPA and continued all my arts-based extracurriculars.
God, I wanted to travel halfway across the world. I was raised on a farm in the middle of nowhere. I’d gone to Disney World after the death of my grandparents on my Dad’s side and I had visited my aunt in Chicago once. But the chance to visit Japan, to try and use the language I’d spent three years learning, well there was no way I wasn’t going to work harder than ever before to make that happen.
I did what I had to do. I worked my ass off during the day, sang in jazz choir and wrote plays in the evenings. And sure enough, I was on a plane headed to Japan that summer. (Which is another story, for another time.)
What was important about that time in my life was that I learned that if I truly wanted to accomplish something, nothing could stop me.
That was a long time ago, but I’m in the midst of a similar time in my life right now.
