The Ten Things I’ve Learned Since Starting a New Business

Everyday at a new business is like rolling the dice on your future.

It’s been a little over one week since I launched my own venture. It’s scary, it’s intense and it also feels amazing. Here’s a look at what I’m learning so far and here’s to knowing, there’s so much more to learn.

1) Love your first clients like nothing else- Those first few people who take the risk to hire you are worth their weight in gold. Though, I’m excited to pitch new business and find other projects, the best chance at success I have is doing right by those I work for now. It’s said that most work comes from good word of mouth. Do your best and more to make these first clients the ones who will work with you for years to come.

2) Know your worth-Make a rate card for yourself. I don’t show mine publicly, but I know my general hourly rate and base all estimates on that. Be willing to negotiate, but don’t take projects out of desperation. The right client who values your time and energy will come along. When I was stressed about whether or not to take on a project, that I wasn’t passionate about, my former boss told me, “All this energy you are putting into debating this, you could be focusing toward winning a client you’re excited to work with.” He was 100% right.
