Why I saw a Coach to work on my career (and why you might want to do the same)

“Talk to me about where you’re at right now”, she asked me. What came out over the next hour was both helpful and a little heartbreaking. But I am so glad I took the time to finally check-in with a professional. And no, in this case, I was not seeing a therapist.

Over a week ago, I took the time to meet with a leadership and executive coach, Merritt Minnemeyer, the founder and creator of Master of One Coaching. Full disclosure, Merritt and I have known each other for over twenty years. She and I both started our own businesses over two years ago. Merritt is a force and always has been. Widowed with three young kids, she rebuilt a life for herself and will always be a personal inspiration to me. Hard times do not intimidate her much. In the midst of a pandemic, I have watched her grow, and watched her business thrive. She’s truly good at what she does, but, proud as I am to know her, I had been reticent to book a session with her.

I ask for lots of help in handling the rest of my life. I hired a tutor to help teach my son. I hired a dog sitter who takes care of my puppy. I have hired a personal trainer before and currently have a nutritionist on “staff” to get my body right. I have hired a home organizer and a house cleaning service in the past. What was I so afraid of? I’m the queen of…
